Finding the Catherine Lawlor School of Art was the most fantastic thing that happened for me. There had been other classes that I had attended but none of them were a match for Catherine’s classes.
Catherine is an exceptional teacher, with an unending supply of knowledge, skill and ability, she is kind and thoughtful in her approach to art, yet will not be happy until you are happy with your work.
The trips abroad that I have travelled on with Catherine and other
students in the art school , have been a revelation , something that I would not have previously thought of doing, for myself, and the learning curve for Plein Air was so enjoyable.
Classes, Pallet knife Days, Trips to Europe, a yearly exhibition, great friends for life… ….. that is why 10 years later I am still with Catherine and her school.
Catherine Lawlor is the most enthusiastic, imaginative and informative art teacher. She also has a keen eye for colour and colour mixing. Everyone who attends Catherine’s classes improve both their painting skills and their knowledge of art. Students learn about composition, different painting styles and techniques while retaining their own interpretation of the subject, and their own ‘style’ of painting.
Catherine also has palate knife classes, painting trips both abroad and in Ireland and hosts an annual art exhibition in Malahide. As a long time student of Catherine’s classes, I have seen my standard of painting And enjoyment of painting improve year upon year.
My love and passion for art has grown over many years. Catherine has guided me along this path and opened my eyes, so that I can create my own original work. Catherine encourages all her students to experiment with different mediums, to ‘move out of their comfort zone’ and widen their range of artwork. The workshops, artist’s demonstrations and painting holidays at home and abroad have given me the tools to experiment and improve my own art.
I joined Catherine Lawlor School of Art 14 years ago as a complete novice. I enjoy the relaxed, informal atmosphere in the class. It built my confidence and communication skills. Catherine is a wonderful caring tutor. She is very helpful understanding and nothing is too much trouble for her. She inspires and motivates you. I love my art classes and hope too for a very long time to come….
I have recently attended my 3rd palette day with Catherine. I think these days are very important in terms of development of colour theory knowledge & improving skills, techniques & speed.
These classes offer the opportunity to students to ‘let go’ and not to over analyze their work. Catherine’s support means that all the planning; composition, colour palette, tone etc are done for you & you can simply enjoy creating a painting in a few hours.
I would highly recommend attending palette days to anyone.
I’ve just returned from a painting trip to San Pedro Spain with Catherine Lawlor School of Art, I found the trip to be very informative and I learned a lot about perspective, Sketching and use of colour. We took plenty of photos for references and also sketched from life using various mediums Charcoal, pencils, fine liners and water colours. We also had a paint and sip night , which involved us all painting a canvas each which when put together made up a painting everyone especially enjoyed that night. Catherine is an excellent teacher, she encourages self-expression while guiding students in their choices of colours and compositions. She is also a great colourist With a genuine love of painting and art in general.
We had a wonderful workshop in Achill with Catherine. We painted and sketched from Kathleen's house overlooking Granuaile's Castle, Cloughmore and along the Wild Atlantic Way. The scenery all over Achill is really spectacular!
I really enjoyed meeting up with everyone again and for the opportunity to sketch and paint 'plein air' in Paul Henry's own country.
Catherine really is a good teacher, she is very much in tune with the level you are at, but challenges you to do better. I would recommend it to anyone who is in love with Art and the Wild Atlantic Way
From 20th- 24th June I spent these few days with a group of students from Catherine Lawlor's school of Art. The scenery was amazing, unspoilt and raw. We spent our time sketching and painting and taking photos and had wonderful guidance from Catherine to paint en plein air, to make the most of the scenery in front of our eyes and to capture amazing compositions for the future. When you go on an art trip, you are seeing your surroundings as potential paintings and with Catherine's guidance, they will evolve into your own original work.
A great experience, I would highly recommend it, thanks Catherine.
